De Zeven Seven: 7 Things to do in the Winelands this Winter

Posted on Wed July 10, 2019.

While the streets are less busy and many go into hibernation, winter in the winelands comes with its own charm and opportunity. The Cape Winelands alone is host to a number of events geared to visitors wanting to keep it cosy or those more adventurous to get out and about. We have curated a list of seven things to do in the area - all within a few minutes' drive from De Zeven.

1. Cosy up to a fireplace at Neil Ellis

Located not too far from De Zeven on the Helshoogte Road is Neil Ellis Wines. Their wine tasting area is a perfect hideaway with its fireplaces and comfy seating. Their one-of-a-kind wine and pesto pairing is also worth a try and comes with four pestos, four single vineyard designate wines and pita bread.

2. Have a cold one & support the SA Beer Route

Passionate brewers in Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Somerset West, Breede Valley and Overberg have joined forces to pioneer the South African Beer Route. The Beer Route website states that "[the route] is dedicated to guiding you, the adventurer and lover of beer, through the delicate beauty and robust flavours of South African Quality Craft Beers."

3. Visit Old Road Wine Co. in Franschhoek

When in Franschhoek, pop in at the Old Road Wine Co. with its quirky wines and distinctive venue space, especially the Fat Man Restaurant. In summer the sundeck is popular for sun downers, while in winter the indoor venue with windows overlooking the vineyards is perfect for escaping the cold.

4. Book a wedding at Blaauwklippen

Not necessarily relevant on a list of "things to do", perhaps you are planning a wedding in winter and searching for a venue with a difference? The glass cathedral at Blaauwklippen has been designed with the environment in mind. Although standing tall and unmissable, it blends in effortlessly with the surrounding grasslands.

5. Get musical with the Stellenbosch Chamber Music Festival

From 5 to 17 July, the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival takes place in the Stellenbosch Konservatorium Building at the university. The SICMF aims to provide talented young South African musicians with the opportunity to study, perform and be inspired by chamber music and orchestral playing.

6. Brunch & Bubbles at Green Goose Eatery

For a brunch with a difference, head to the Green Goose Eatery in Stellenbosch. This simple yet vibrant eatery offers a five-course brunch and 'bottomless bubbly' on special days during June and July.

7. Go for a run with Warwick Wine Estate

On 14 July Warwick Wine Estate is offering an Adventure Trail Run of 5km, 10km and 15km along their winding trails through the vineyards. You will be rewarded for getting up early on a winter's evening with spectacular views and a warm coffee before your run, and wine tasting after.
